The basic requirements of leaders in times good and bad, he said, are to set direction, establish standards and release the energy of the organization. Ten Rules for Leading the Turnaround of a Declining Business
My article for Monster.com was published yesterday in the Recruiting and Hiring Advice section. Here are my ten rules for a successful turnaround:
1. Start with the answer.
2. Get out in front of people.
3. Look before you leap.
4. Get out to where the work is done.
5. Go out and listen to customers and clients.
6. Listen to everybody in the organization.
7. Recognize that you cannot get the job done alone.
8. Lay out your vision, purpose, values…
9. Use outside resources.
10. Develop short list of critical priorities.

I have been involved in turnaround situations at Topco Associates, Kayser-Roth Corporation, and Cordiant. The similarities between these situations were greater than the differences. In each case, they were companies that had fallen on hard times, but there was a belief that they could rise again like a phoenix from the ashes.
